The renovation project of the basement dining area at Miklošičeva 19 in Ljubljana represents a modern intervention in a heritage-listed building. The building, known as the Palace of the Mutual Insurance Company, is one of the most significant examples of Jože Plečnik’s architecture in Ljubljana. It reflects his distinctive architectural language, which combines classical elements with modern functional solutions. The monumental corner palace, built in 1930, was originally designed as a mixed-use commercial and residential building, with its ground floor clearly distinguished from the upper residential levels. Over time, the building underwent various adaptations that influenced its interior spaces—among them, the basement housed a city cinema, a puppet theater, a gymnasium, and later a dining area.
The renovation project preserves the architectural heritage and key spatial qualities of the building while adapting it to the contemporary needs of employees. The new spatial concept includes a multi-purpose dining area as well as a space for occasional employee gatherings. A key aspect of the renovation involves the creation of varied ambiences, separated by acoustic partitions, the integration of tea kitchen elements into wall niches, and the arrangement of spaces for informal social interactions. The project also envisions the establishment of a small outdoor dining area in the building’s atrium. The design process carefully considers the historical layering of the space, emphasizing the preservation of architectural elements and fostering a dialogue between Plečnik’s heritage and modern design solutions. The concept incorporates carefully selected materials and a color palette that align with the existing architecture while highlighting the historical character of the space. Upon completion, the renovation will enable the functional modernization of the existing premises while preserving the historical identity of the building.
