The starting point of the comprehensive renovation project for the Učenjak unit of the Kindergarten was the energy refurbishment of the building. The client is implementing this refurbishment as part of the Ljubljana Energy Renovation Project, which equips buildings systematically with modern and environmentally friendly energy infrastructure. The goal is to achieve more efficient energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the client desired to increase the spatial capacity of the kindergarten from seven to ten classrooms, necessitating a comprehensive building renovation.
The consideration for energy refurbishment and expansion was based on preserving the existing building. The well-designed structure with classrooms oriented towards the open landscape was enhanced with a new wooden extension. This addition accommodates three classrooms, a central multipurpose area, a distribution kitchen, and staff spaces. The design of the extension follows the concept of folded roofs from the original building, creating a contrast between the old and new sections. Despite the exterior contrast, the interior spaces are harmoniously unified due to their functional interconnection.
